I'm maybe getting away from the main subject with a 90 degree change but 
the Ecurie Ecosse D-type Jags which placed first and second at the 1957 
Le Mans (three had started from that team) had different horizontal 
strips just above the inlet opening. The cars had from one to three 
strips to distinguish them from each other and, probably, the other D-types.
