[Sunbeam Talbot Email List] stripes/racing stripes

Hi all,
Briggs Cunningham was the first to use racing stripes on his cars in 1951.
The benefits were
1.) he said it was easier to spot his cars on the track
2.) if a driver spun it was easier to align the car with the track
I¹ve also heard that one of the primary reasons stripes were adopted by
others was that it was easier to tell how much a car was under or
oversteering as it went through a curve this would help in setting up a
car for a particular track. I¹ve never heard anything regarding width.

Hello Ray,
I was in the U.S. Air Force in the mid 60's too. Saw lots of stripes on
many cars but didn't know the width meant something. What a concept.
