Thanks Mal. Interesting report.
I had not heard of these "Works" cars, being a newbie to the Alpine world.
Your replica is gorgeous.
Some people don't like replica cars at all, especially if modified
originals. I think most don't care either way, so long as there is no
pretense at being an original car.
Years ago there was a guy in the Packard Club who somehow found and
purchased all the Packard Darrin body moulds and offered to build a fake
'41/'42 Darrin for anyone who had a Packard 120 to re-body and a Super 8
motor and drive train to drop into it. You should have heard the outcry!
He propose in some ads that they would be so good that they could be passed
off as the real thing!! There was serious outrage at the time. I think a
couple were actually built, though. I never heard what happened to those
Dutch Darrin moulds or that guy. I wonder.
So, it would be almost correct to put a Union Jack plate on my car's wings
then and even correct if the car were ever used in a rally. Any car could
be used in a rally, right, didn't have to be a Works car, or did it? I
think they those flags are beautiful, so I am going to add them this spring.
(Gooding is, after all, a Devonshire name, you know?)
Best regards,
Dan

Hi Dan and all, Bob has answered your questions, to continue, the Union jack
badges, were fitted onto the rally cars, for overseas rallies,I think I read,
insisted by Lord Rootes in the early 50s ( someone will no doubt will
correct this) The side opening vent on my car MKV21,were also fitted to
Alpines for the 50s Rallies, possibly after Norman Garrard performed the
feather duster exercise on the Alpines Bonnet louvres, and found they didn't
do much at all the extract heat from the engine bay. These side vents
certainly work.warm air is pushed out whilst motoring along.
I hope no one is offended too much in my car, it was built in good faith,as
a REPLICA works rally car,and has always been displayed as a replica, and
nothing else, we are the bottom end of the World here in Aus, and have a
extremely large Classic car scene, and its just great to promote the
Sunbeams and to some extent how the cars appeared in those early days of
Rallying, we also had Talbot Alpines in Rallys here in the 50s winning the
Victorian Alpine Rally a few times,in the hands of Harry Firth, and Graham
Honiville, Why do people build Replicas? Why do people dress up as Elvis
Presley? Mal Clark.
