Hi Bob thanks for reply,I set the oil pump drive to the exact position suggested in Manual,so as the distributor is correct, what I failed to mention is I fitted a Petronix electronic ignition.the kit was for the Talbot,LM 244?? so you would assume that would meet the original specs and wouldn't affect the position of the spark, who knows? anyway I am not overly concerned about it,as I will no doubt have to service it in the future, thanks again,Mal Clark.

  Hi Mal,

Just a shot in the dark but perhaps when you set the distributor drive shaft in place, it is off by one tooth with the camshaft gear. All my timing marks line up properly with the opening using a timing light.

I have a friend with a Jag XK 150 which had an engine rebuild and the person who assembled it mounted the flywheel on the crank 180 degrees off (a symetrical bolt pattern) so the marks are now useless but it appears from what you are saying, this is not the case with your engine.

  Good luck,
  Bob

Hi everyone, wondering if anyone has experiance problems with the Timing marks on the Talbot or Alpines,a Alpine I am doing at the moment has had a engine rebuild, while it was all stripped down,I cleaned off and white painted the timing marks on the flywheel, when the engine was partialy assembled the marks were lined up with the centre of the hole in the engine back plate, and the no 1 piston was at TDC,as it should be, when the engine was started, I used a timing light to align the marks again, this time they were no where to be seen, having set the timing up by ear to get it running, only when the timing was retarded too much, did the marks appear in the hole with the light,at that setting the engine would not rev very well, so I went back to "by ear" and it runs very well, revs ok and no lock up when starting it,so the timing must be within close to being ok, I know the manual says use a test light at the distributor to set the timing, but I would have thought the use of a timing light would be prefered for fine tuning, appears not, any comments on why???????????
