Hi everyone, wondering if anyone has experiance problems with the Timing marks on the Talbot or Alpines,a Alpine I am doing at the moment has had a engine rebuild, while it was all stripped down,I cleaned off and white painted the timing marks on the flywheel, when the engine was partialy assembled the marks were lined up with the centre of the hole in the engine back plate, and the no 1 piston was at TDC,as it should be, when the engine was started, I used a timing light to align the marks again, this time they were no where to be seen, having set the timing up by ear to get it running, only when the timing was retarded too much, did the marks appear in the hole with the light,at that setting the engine would not rev very well, so I went back to "by ear" and it runs very well, revs ok and no lock up when starting it,so the timing must be within close to being ok, I know the manual says use a test light at the distributor to set the timing, but I would have thought the use of a timing light would be prefered for fine tuning, appears not, any comments on why???????????
