David,
A wealth of info.
The previous owner did not have much mechanical prowess. The drain pipe 
has no pin, no ball, and is loose in the fitting. The previous owner 
complained of a carb problem too, this might explain.

I'll put wiper seals on my Bamforths list, thanks.

Todays task is to change tires from really old and cracked bias ply to 
new radial (that look like bias ply) I got from Diamond Back Tires.
Great looking vintage tread pattern, too.
This will also get the car on jack stands to get the clutch job and oil 
leak investigation underway. I want to inspect brakes while I have the 
wheels off.
