Hi Bill ... There was apparently a lot of variation in the body's and
frame's of these cars. the factory used rubber mounting pads and alloy shims to
level and square up the body's. You can make your own pads by cutting squares
from a truck mud flap and punching holes in them
(be sure to use a heavy duty flap with fabric reinforcement, not just plain
rubber as those will just split and fall apart ) (or use the sidewall of an
old tire) You can also buy alloy bar stock at any hardware store and make
more shims too if you need more.
Start out with one or two rubber pads between each mounting point, then add
shims as needed to level up the body, paying particular attention to the fit
of the doors and wings, when everything looks right, start by tightening the
main mounting bolts under the A pillar (the bolts under the door hinge
area), then tighten the ones behind the doors, and then the ones in the trunk
area. As you do this make sure that you're not pulling the body out of shape,
constantly check that the doors and fenders align up and don't bind, you will
most likely have to add or remove a few shims somewhere to keep everything
straight. It is a good idea to catalog and record the number of pads and shims
that are removed from each mounting point when taking things apart so that you
can use that number as a starting point when reassembling everything. I have
seen as many as 6 or 8 shims in any one spot on these cars.
Good Luck <> Steve Cota <>

Subject: [Sunbeam Talbot Email List] Chassis spacers

am I right in thinking that the spacer that goes between the chassis and the
rear body mounting is a thin alloy spacer as highlighted in Red in the
attached photo ?
or should it be thicker one similar to those under the floor ?
Thanks
Bill
