Wes - I was wondering why an Alpine turned up in 1951 - now I know the
answer. What a great article. I think Rootes were being a bit ambitious
saying the S-T 90 DHC was suitable for Sporting trials. Shortly after
1951, I started doing Sporting Trials with a Cannon - a very different,
purpose-built car. Allard competed pre-war with his V8 specials but Mike
Cannon got it right with a very light (600lbs), Ford side valve
engined car (+/- 35 bhp) which could climb slippery slopes with ease.
However, I mustn't digress otherwise Bob will be on my case.
I've just given up trying to fit a replacement, second hand cable
between gear change and gear box on my Alpine. The replacement inner is
very stiff, thicker than the existing cable and won't go through the old
outer. I couldn't get the old outer off without taking floor boards or
prop shaft out so rather than immobilize the car, I replaced the old
cable and will let my usual garage play with it.
Cheers all
