[Sunbeam Talbot Email List] Gearbox Woes

I¹m getting a recently purchased 1953 Alpine in shape to put back on the
road but in the process I have run into gearbox problems. The box seems to
be OK, however shifting gears is extremely difficult because in the car¹s
past life someone altered the shift linkage, shortening parts and in general
making it impossible to now rebuild. The tranny does not have overdrive. I
have not been successful in locating replacement linkage parts and I am now
wondering if I should install a new transmission with a floor shifter. My
options seem to be limited to one of the following:

1. Somehow, find the proper linkage for this transmission.
2. Find a floor shift conversion like a Kneershift unit or similar and keep
the existing transmission.
3. Buy a new transmission with a floor shift, either 5 speed or an
overdrive. Does anyone have a recommendation for a good unit that is not
overly complicated to install?

Which is the best resolution to my problem or is there another option?

Thanks,
