Re. Don Vosper's problem, it is quite likely to be simply a matter of adjustment. I experienced a similar fault, but with first gear, and found that the movement is so small between proper selection and partial selection that it needed several attempts to achieve a positive result.
You will need to take out the removable floor section, and first adjust selector lever for first as in R.W.M. Section E, Page 13, then select each gear in turn, each time making sure that the selection lever actually moves the gear into engagement (you can feel the selector ball engage). Leave the floor out, and carefully take a noisy trip, trying each gear selection and watching the linkage - I needed to make three such road tests before I was happy. Assuming all is now well, replace floor section and carpets. If this does not cure the problem, it may be wear in the selector forks, a weak or broken spring in the selector ball engagement with the selector shaft, or a problem with the second gear or syncro ring - but I would back adjustment every time, and it is not expensive!
