[Sunbeam Talbot Email List] Accelerator cable problem fix

Hi Sunbeamers---
I've worked several hours trying to find out why it takes so much more spring tension to my new cable,(from Bamforth?) to bring my carb back all the way to the idle position, than the original cable.( I didn't want to add more springs that might cause more wear on the accelerator shaft.)

The answer is that the new cable assembly has a larger inner wire than the original. The crimped on brass ends have an outlet hole about the same size as the original. The larger size wire will just barley clear the holes in the brass ends. The slightest bend or kink on either end of the cable will cause a great amount of friction and prevent the original spring from returning the carb to the idle position.

After removing the cable assembly.

The fix is to cut off the inner cable wire retainer at the carb end with a Dremel tool cut off blade. Slide the inner wire out and enlarge the holes in the brass ends with a drill. Re- assemble using a small screw type cable clamp to re-attach the wire to the carb bracket. Lots of work but worth the trouble. Ed
