To all Correspondents!

My last post did not appear anywhere I hope this one does!

Well I have been reading the correspondence on this matter with interest
and not just because my 90 DHC has (had) scuttle shake! Now my 90 saloon
(sedan) has no problems whatsoever unless the wheels are out of balance
or in general a problemconnected with the suspensio/wheels. Scuttle
shake in a car without a roof is a lack of integrity in the bodywork in
particular the bulkhead or parts connected to it. It seems pretty simple
you cut a roof of a saloon (sedan) and you have a convertable. Well no
you have a car which lacks integrity in its structural strength. Just
ask one of those backyard converters how they get over the problem, lots
of steel. This is exactly how Rootes overcame the problem when they were
designing them, lots of ectra steel. In particular in the A post area
(and the B post) when they designed and fitted an additional inner
strengthener shaped like a lopsided 'T'. It runs up the A post and
forward and backwards inside the sills. They also for ghood measure put
a very heavy steel reinforcement which runs from and is welded to the
main front body support, you can see it from underneath. This in turn
enters the car and is welded to the forward facing side of the A post.
It is this piewce of steel that gives rise to the triangular section on
the floor inside on each side.
So my suggestion is that if these areas are incorrectly mended/replaced
or even not replaced at all (this was the case on my car! on one side!)
Or it is very rusted at any of the previously mentioned palces you will
have scuttle shake no matter what you do with the engine. Oh and another
thing the reason why the Alpine/DHC has a different engine stabiliser
system (at the front as opposed to teh rear of the engine) is because
the Rootes engineers knew that the bulkhead for all of their
modifications was still not quite up to the job of stabilising the
engine,so they used the chassis instead!
Rootes experience on our cars came up again I know for sure on the
Series Sunbeam Alpine and this was an almost purpose designed sports
acr! When it was prototyped they had terrible scuttle shake, the cure?
two tubular bars bolted to the bulkhead and the inner wings, result? No
scuttle shake so I assume they did actually know something.
Well thats my observations on the subject and my suggestion is to have a
really close look at the A post area of your car. Which is why I hope
that my car will be cured as I am in the process of rebuilding these
exact areas all defective one way and another.
