[Staowners] Scuttle Shake

Hi every one;
Here is my 50 cents worth, the 2 cents ain't worth the copper it's stamped on!
My thoughts are that scuttle shake is highly likely to crankshaft harmonics.
I feel that the reason Mal's scuttle shake is gone is due to the factor that he has put a power steering pump on the engine! The dampening effect of the pump under load removes some of the harmonics from the crankshaft. Now this may be only one factor and the head mounted stabilizer bracket might help a little too.
On my Mk I Alpine I noted that the engine mounting brackets on the frame, where the rubber mounts are bolted, were broken at the front and back edges. To me this suggests high torque loads and these are sometimes associated with harmonics.
Back to the old adage that 4 cylinder engines over 2 liters are prone to crankshaft failures related to harmonics.
Even in today's new high displacement 4 cylinder engines you will find 1 or 2 "silent shafts" engineered into the design to dampen the harmonics.
If anyone has installed a good harmonic balance crankshaft pulley, it would be nice to know if they still have the scuttle shake?
If anyone is removing the Alpine front stabilizer I would be concerned about engine mounting failures in the frame area. There is a lot of engine weight above the crank centerline and we all know how heavy our engines are.
Our continuing concern with the scuttle shake is well worth pursuing as it indicates unresolved stress loads that will break components and we all want our treasures to remain operational and avoid unnecessary costs.
Well that is it for my bit. For what it may be worth? I wish all of our group and any other owners of ST's all the best for this new season of driving ( here in Canada) or wherever you may be.
Ernie
