Indeed a sad sight, I thought only UK cars suffered from the tin rot that badly! 
George is right, that is an overdrive installed. In fact there weren't that many MK3 coupes produced and this one seems to have had all the extras - including the rev counter, which are now quite scarce.

What a sad sight. Is that an overdrive behind the gearbox? Also, there is the old radio in its ventilated (rusty) box by the battery.
