Hi Pete- Thanks for your reply. The pinion is definitely rounded. I inserted a new square end into it and it turns freely. Under magnification it is very obviously rounded. I cleaned the area very well, applied some JB weld to the hole,greased the square end piece of a universal cable and inserted into the pinion before the JB weld set up. Upon removal,I now have a nice square drive at the pinion. I let it set for two days,connected the cable yesterday. The Speedo is working great now but who knows how long. Now to get my water pump repaired. Ed

  ED, It's probably not the drive gear that's at fault. More than likely the cable has been replaced and the square drive made too small. A rough, but probably efffective,fix would be to wrap the cable end with aluminium foil to make it a better fit in the drive gear. There is little force required to drive the cable,so it should work ok.

    Hi  Guys  - I'm in the process of trying to get my speedometer to indicate. The speedometer itself is OK . The cable is OK but  the core spins freely in the square drive section of the  speedometer pinion. Is this a common problem? Even a new square core section just turns freely in the pinion. Any Ideas on how to tighten up the square section so it will drive the core? Anyone have a spare pinion for a mkllA or Alpine part #P88871 They will sell me?
      On a side note I have been successful (no April Fool) In grafting a new bulb and line to my nonworking water temp gauge, took about an hour cost $17. Now  works great.  Regards  Ed
