FYI: Both of my USA model 1953 STAs had the style of lens that Richard
mentioned below: "SUNBEAM" on it, without the back up light feature.

Bill...  Interesting topic.  I just completed some research on the
license
plate lens for the 1953 Alpine Mk1.   In my 15 year search for that
special
Mk1, I saw many Alpines in various states of repair and modification.  I
took pictures of Mk1 and Mk3 cars or copies the images from the sales
information.  I use these photos for reference purposes, which is how I
came
to the following determination:  All the photographs of 1953 Alpines
show a
maroon lens with white lettering.  The lens has "SUNBEAM" on it and does
not
have the back up light feature.
I ordered a new license plate lens from Sunbeam Talbot Spares in England
(Bamforths) from a Buy It Now eBay auction.  The lens I received had the
back up light feature and would not fit the chrome surround for the lens
from my car.  Bamforths gladly agreed to an exchange and clearly stated
that
the back up lenses were on Sunbeam Talbots not Alpines.

I always thought that Alpines just had the Sunbeam
logo on the 
rear number plate lamp assembly, but looking at the
Parts Manual
 I might be wrong.

Parts Manual Page 158 Plate E shows the two styles

Item 106 with "Sunbeam Talbot" logo is listed under
the section 
Side, Roof and Rear Lamps (Mk 11, 11A & Alpine)

Item 130 with "Sunbeam" logo is listed under the
section 
Side, Roof and Rear Lamps (Mk 111)

So what style did an Alpine Mk1 have?

To me it looks like the book is saying the one with
the 
"Sunbeam Talbot" logo

Is this right ?
