Another step in fuel protection is to install a replaceable"can" type fuel filter in the line at a point of your choice. I installed mine at a point where the fuel line curves from the tank to the chassis. A pain to get to but unobtrusive and something that does'nt have to be accessed that often. If you are replacing the fuel line the filter location could be moved to a point along the chassis as it would be easy to put a bump out in the pipe to give clearance for the filter to the chassis. Happy New Year to you too, John and to all Forum members.
The idea of a copper petrol pipe is a good one. I'm sure the Rootes engineers never thought that their steel pipe would be in use 55 years after it left the factory and even a minimum of internal rust would act as a trap for any rubbish which got picked up by the pump. On the TO DO check list, scrub :"Rod petrol pipe and visually check line" and replace with" Replace line with copper pipe - check that it is well protected from any accidental impact"
Cheers

George,
Its worth remembering that the fuel pipe that runs along the chassis is steel, prone to rust and hence perforation. Rodding it might just see it off altogether. I replaced mine with a copper pipe and have never had a problem.
Happy New Year,

Good point, Roy - I was going to "rod' the fuel line with some sort of flexible wire to make sure there was no residual gum in the tube and I will now add a visual inspection of the whole length.
Another mod. will be to add an electric SU or SU type, low pressure pump on the bulkhead in line with the mechanical pump and with a switch under the dash. This will give me a back-up and also the capability to quickly prime the carb. after the car has been in the garage for a while.

Hi Bob - yes, it certainly was fuel starvation. If I took off the top of the carb.after a stoppage, the float chamber was empty. I changed the pump - happened to have a NOS with me - but the problem persisted. I'm almost 100% sure it is 'junk' in the tank blocking the pick up tube so the tank must come out. Alan Orpet has re-built my carb since September and it runs much better - it was always too rich before.
I'll let you know what I find with the tank out.
BTW, Peter Shimmel advised me of a grave error in my previous post. Enzo Ferrari was the racing team manager of Alfa Romeo, not Maserati. When I think that only last month I was in Modena for 4 days and went round the Maserati factory, the Ferrari classic dept., the Pagani "factory" (they were on car no. 83), the Lamborghini factory and a couple of famous body shops and museums including Stanguellini, I don't know how I managed to mix Massers and Alfas!!!!! As we drove back to France, we visited the Alfa Romeo museum at Arese, just outside Milan - a well guarded secret, there were only about 3 people in it and it's full of Alfa history (and pre/post-war racing cars).
Contritely
George
