I have been told that it is an Americanization...or, some variation
at any rate of, McRae....Perhaps when the Crown sent all those Scots
over to Ireland to settle things down the spelling changed..what we
call over here "Scots-Irish"...An instrumental group in the American
Revolution and from what I understand responsible for transferring to
the American Indians the practice of scalping! Surely that couldn't
be true? Also, isn't it the case, going back to the last global
warming event, that most of Scotland was populated from the south by
people from Ireland? (And from the North, according to my Orkneywoman
wife, by the Vikings? The other side of her family from Norway
disparagingly refers to her fathers side of the family as
"shipwrecked Norwegians" ...They make decent whisky though!

FWIW, there is also some Scots song friends of mine are wont to break
into at times where, among other clans there is an end of verse
reference to "..the wild McGraws"...not sure what that's about...

I suppose it won't be long before we will be able to take a cheap DNA
test which will disabuse us all of our personal mythologies about
ourselves over here in this land of mutts...Imagine the wet blanket
that will put on all the lads and lasses in their kilts at the local
"Highland Games" when they find out they are not Highland Chieftans
at all but rather but Polish Eskimos! :~)...

Hope this is not going to the group, but if it does, I guess I
should say something about Sunbeams, but, as someone said, it is
Christmas!
