[Staowners] ALPINE FOR SALE -- air inlets & Rimfinishers

The air inlet grilles were originally chromed only along the front edge and
about 3/4" deep on the slats. The rest of the Mazak slats and casting were
painted body colour. It appears to me that Rootes, in order to save
plating costs, just dipped the leading edges of the slats into the plating
solution and then covered the unplated Mazak in paint (probably by dipping
into paint the castings in the opposite direction up to the edge of the
chrome). Polished stainless steel or chromed veneers can be made up to
cover the front portions of the slats and they look quite good contrasted
with the rest of the Mazak painted, mimicking the original look.

The Bamforths did at one time (probably still do) carry stainless steel
reproduction Rimfinishers (the technical term). They are not the greatest
quality, a bit wavy. Since the originals were chromed steel, and I have a
very good plater I work with, I had mine smoothed, polished, and heavily
chromed. They look very good, but it's not an inexpensive route to go.
