Hey Richard ... as you surmise getting the box in and out of the car is a  
bigger job than rebuilding it.
 As the steering column must come out integral with the box.  The manual 
should describe all the steps involved in removing it
 
Once the box is out, inspecting and adjusting it is relatively simple.  
Instructions are in the manual & Tony Bamforth has all the pieces necessary  to do 
a complete rebuild. 
 
As for suggesting a shop, I don't know anyone in your area,
 You're probably too far away to bring it here so I guess just find  someone 
you trust ???
