I drive a 53 Alpine with 30 degrees of steering wheel play and the driving
preciseness of a blind autocrosser. My alpine still has bias-ply tires. I
know what Ray Mead is talking about. The thought I have when thinking about
those sports car drivers of the '50s is how the hell they ever became
enthusiasts driving a piece of crap like this. Why did they ever give up
their horse and buggy?
Steve Cota says it perfectly. They were not meant to handle this way. My
question to Steve is how difficult is it to rip the steering box out of the
car to rebuild it. I have the shop manual and can perform major surgery if
needed but my time is limited. What do you suggest relative to finding a
shop to carry out the repair?
