Steve, Mal's suggestion is probably the way to go. Years age you used to be able to get a two part fitting that you could insert in a hose. It entailed making a half inch hole in the hose and inserting the male part of the fitting from the inside of the hose which left a flange onthe inside with a half inch nipple,threaded at the base, protruding through. A nut then sandwiched the fitting securing it to the hose. haven't seen them for a long time. Local radiator shop may be able to help.
