Hi John,I know this will not help you one bit, I have fitted an alternator to my latest Alpine project.I have fitted one of Jim Wilkinsons Power Steering units,as well as Air conditioning, because of the power steer pump mounts above the Dynamo, theres no room for a full size Alternator,I have fitted an alternator from a Kawasaki motor bike, which is 40 Amp,and minute in size,(alot of hot Rodders use these alternators disguised inside the Generators) fortunately I had my engine on the bench at good working height, enabling me to adapt/fit up the unit and bracketing, which I think would be difficult to do once engine in situ, all the components Power steer,Alternator, water pump, use same fan belt, wereas the Air cond runs a ribbed belt with extra pully on lower crank pully,in therory all should work, but engine is at reconditioners and all above is untried, the wiring for this alternator is very simple two wires,Black to constant power, and red to ignition switch, only slight problem this alternator doesn't have a warning light circuit,so will rely on amp gauge(I have found unless pitch black very hard to see warning light,on our cars) last thing to do because of 40amps,with a 30amp amp gauge,a Shunt wire has to be fitted to the back of the amp gauge which is just a loop wire, between terminals good luck John, Mal Clark.

  Subject: [Staowners] Alternator Swap

  Hi folks,
Has anyone replaced the dynamo/generator with an alternator at all? If so, any recommendations as to which alternator fits best (I'm particularly interested in the MK2A engine) and any hints on the re-wiring necessary?
  Thanks,
  John Badger
