Mal - was that zip out rear window made of glass? My present rear window, of clear plastic, is quite large - I must look at the handbook when I get it back and at some old publicity photos.
Woke up to blue sky so all is well for golf today.

George and Alf, under the rear shelf,as well as the centre strap I spoke about,to hold the side screens, there were originally two straps about12 to 14" long which were secured by two press studs on each strap, they were secured across the shelf one each side, these straps were used to hold down the zip out rear window of the soft top, when you unzipped the window it then laid onto the bodywork inside the car, you then unclipped one end of each of the straps and clipped it onto the unzipped window, the idea was to stop the window flapping about in the wind, you will find the press stud bases, or holes where they went, Can anyone comfirm wether all Alpines Home and Export had these zip out(down) soft top windows, good luck Mal Clark

Thanks Alf ..... I don't have, at the moment, my Owners Handbook nor the Workshop Manual as I left both at Gire's garage in Angouleme when they moved/re fabricated my exhaust from a side exit to its proper routing coming out at the right rear. I looked at the shelf area but only found three very small holes on the edge of the shelf - once central and one each side about 2 ft away.
When I get the books back next week, I will look for these straps which Mal describes so well. With the side screens 'bagged' and held by the soft top, I don't think I need to fit them. The hanging skirt/curtain of "carpet" like material and colour is a useful mod. and hides/protects the hood very well. It is secured to the double skin at the top by 5 Lift-a-Dot fasteners.
Still raining ...... very fine, like Scottish haar.

P.S. When replying to Staowner posts, use Reply All otherwise it just goes to the person who wrote the last note - but then perhaps that's what you intended !!!!!

George,Thanks for your reply
If you have an owners handbook ?-page 47 you will see that the side screens are held in position against the rear bulkhead and within the shelf by a strap which is secured to the bulkhead by some type of clip with a buckle for the strap on the front edge of the shelf – if you have a look at your rear bulkhead/panel you should find 2 holes about 2/3 rds up and in your case offset towards the passengers side. Perhaps they weren’t fitted to U.S. imports but this is most unlikely as they were as you know meant for your market.
If you send me your address I will send you a zerox copy of the appropriate page from the handbook
Thanks again ,
Alf

Alf - the side screens, when not in use, fit behind the seats on the 'shelf' over the rear axle and behind the soft top when its folded down. On my Alpine, there is a piece of carpet attached under the bodywork behind the seats and hanging down to the floor. If I chose to go 'topless' and without side screens, I first loosen the soft top clips on the windscreen and unclip the rear of the soft top from its two chrome clips on the boot/trunk. Then I raise the dear lady's carpet skirt and bring it out over the boot. Then I take the side screens off the doors, put them into soft but strong individual bags which the P.O. had made and stow on the 'shelf' behind the seats. Then the hood is lowered, folded and properly stowed behind the seats and finally, the old lady's skirt is lowered over it all.
I don't understand how any straps fit into this process unless in the original Alpine, there were straps hanging down when my skirt is and these were used to hold the side screens on the shelf over the rear axle if one was driving with no side screens but with the hood still up. Also, what are you trying to secure to the "front" of the car? Elucidate !!!!
Cheers

Hi Guys,
Can anyone out there send me a sketch of the side screen bracket and belt with lengths, width etc. and how it is secured to the front of the car – I’m talking about the straps etc. which secure the side screens in the car when they are not being used.
