Ian, it looks like the wing badges in the picture,if not what ever they are, they are in the same place,Sterling cars bought back memories.thats what got me into Sunbeams,in the first place,my Father had a caravan,at Walton on Naze, where Sterling were,if I remember, they also had cement mixers in the show room, along with a few Talbots, and a couple of Alpines,I know they at one stage had a MKV works Alpine there, should have bought it then, about 600 pounds,I also remembered I cringed when they told me, they very often replaced Alpine and Talbot floors with plywood, good luck,Mal Clark.

  Guy,

This photo and the story are very interesting.

I never knew that MWK 17 even existed,

Evidently it was a cold day (night) with officials well wrapped in heavy coats & hats.

The car is fitted with three hooded flame-thowers ( Spotlights) and a drivers

side door mirror which was an after market Rootes Special Accessory as was

the badge bar onto which the flame-thowers are secured.

Snow tyres are noted, and a snow tyre with chains sitting in the roof rack .

( I bet that caused a wind whistle at speed, and blocked the sunshine roof)

The most interesting accessory though is the Perspex deflector fitted

atop the bonnet ( Hood in USA) . I've seen these on other Rally car pictures.

Current in the UK at the time was a proprietary brand of gnat deflector,

designed to throw the multitudes of hovering gnats away from the screen,

which were prevalent on warm summer English evenings: but that one on MWK 17

what was that? A falling snow deflector?

When you look carefully there is something at the back end of the front wings on both

sides that look like MK III cooling ports, but the front bumper and side grilles

identify the model probably as a Sunbeam Talbot MK IIA .

That looks like a young Stirling Moss behind the wheel.

  Fantastic picture - Thanks.

Now I once restored an Alpine Special Reg No PRW 950, and suspected

that it may have been something to do with Rootes Team. When I bought it from

Sterling Cars (UK) in the 1970's it was running - just, and fitted with two

Aero Screens and no trim. Anybody know about that car ?

  Ian L. Moist.

  Hi all.

Mal Clark wondered if the MWK rally cars had vents, they didn't but there's a story to add.

In 2005 just after the NEC show MWK17 was found this car has been lost for over 43 years, the car is under restoration and is probably the car with the longest rally history.

in 1953 Stirling Moss was placed 6th, in the Monte Carlo rally, Murray-Frame/John Pearman was placed 2nd in the 1953 RAC rally, the car was sold to Edwin Elliot who rallied this car in the following rally's.

1953 Alpine rally where he and Dick Edmond crashed the car, in to a wall, rebuilt it was used in 1954 Tulip rally, 1954 RAC rally,1955 RAC rally He used it in many small rally's i.e. London, Sunbeam Talbot Owners club Rally's.

There is the Historic motorsport show on 23rd to 25th March where there is three cars on the stand Alpine's MVK21/23 & 24, with surviving drivers Dick Edmond & Edwin's son will be on the stand on Saturday. I enclose a photograph of MWK17.

I hope this is of interest.

  Guy Woodhams.
