Pete Hi, your mention of the mk3 rev counter,on this mk3 I have here there is a large plastic adaptor filler plug where the tacho would go,this plug is silver and blue with a chrome "S" in the centre not the "Crowned Hound" as you mentioned, interesting, Mal Clark.

  George, Missed your email first time round. The rev counter on Mk1 Alpines was an accessory on the domestic market but standard on US exports hence the seperate housing mounted under the fascia.On all variations of the MK111 there was provision for a rev counter in a modified fascia. If no rev counter was fitted there was a filler with the Sunbeam dog/lion [depending on who you talk to] emblem. Again the rev counter was standard on US Alpines. The "bulb" type overriders were also fitted to later Mk1 Alpines so don't serve as positive I.D. All models came with a column shift although a floor shift conversion was offered aftermarket by Castle of Leicester which was copied int he US by Kneer. I think the column shift is probably a good theft deterant. If a thief figured out that you have to press a button to start the car chances are they would never find reverse. A problem often encountered by people who know where it is.            Pete
