Subject: Talbot Drophead

Hello, every one,you may remember a couple of years ago,I imformed you I had purchased a really rusty MK2 Talbot drophead, well I thought you may find the following interesting, The log book was found in the glove box ,this log book noted, the replacement parts from Feb 1957 to Oct 1967,the last registration on the car was Feb 1968,when it was left in the back garden, until I rescued it 2 years ago,
Feb 1957 at 21,000 miles, Two replacement tyres.
May 1957 at 23,000 miles, Two replacement tyres
June 1957 at 24,000 miles New battery (Masse) thats the brand.
May 1959 at 38,515 miles New muffler,
 May 1960 New water pump,
 June 1960 New battery, (again)
June 23rd 1960 46,000 mls Brake linings replaced.
July 11th 1960 46,178mls Replacement of Hemisphere in Diff?.
Aug 1960 Relacquered body and new hood (soft top )
 Aug 23rd 1960 I new tyre ( Goodrich)
 Nov 1961 New Muffler
Aug 1962 59,129mls New battery (again)
April 1963 63,000 mls Valve grind, decarbonise.and surface grind ( new plugs, Points, service air cleaner)
Oct 1964 72,000 mls New muffler.
June 1965 75,700 mls New battery.
Oct 1965, 77,900 mls Water pump repair, Cylinder head surface ground, valves seated. 4 new spark plugs.
Oct 1966 85,450 mls King pins replaced,New brake cable,Tail pipe replaced.
March 1967, 86,700 mls Reconditioned engine and gearbox fitted, New radiator core,New engine mounts.
April 1967,87,500 mls New starter solenoid new thermostat.
Oct 1967, 92,220mls New Brake master cylinder fitted

So it imformed me that it was fairly heavy on batteries, and Mufflers, and interestingly the Diff problem at 46,178miles, appears diffs were and still are a weak area on our cars, 2 cylinder head jobs then a replacement engine a gearbox, by all accounts the mileage now is just over 92,400 miles which may indicate only 8,000 miles on the reconditioned engine and gearbox,I should think the gearbox could be in good condition, not so sure with the Engine,it has been 39 years it has been unused, could possible save the crank, etc, another interesting point in August 1960 the car was repainted and a new soft top made, the car was only 6 or 7 years old then which indicated the Factory paint wasn't long lived, nor the roof,(we do not have the extremes of weather in this country) so not sure what was wrong with the roof, unless he decided to change the colour, also can only assume back when the car was painted it was change from the beautiful Saphire Blue to Ivory, its Ivory now over the blue,a backward step I would have thought, another record I have is the many number of times during regular servicing, the brakes were adjusted, anyway hope this has given you 10 minutes of your time to reflect on this bit of trivia, good luck and happy Sunbeaming, Mal Clark.
